  13. NOTE ** The Homasote Company manufactures various products
  14.         for the building industry.  This section covers
  15.         only a part of their product line:  "Nova" cork-
  16.         faced acoustical wall panels.  Nova cork paneling
  17.         is a completely finished structural panel requiring
  18.         no on-site surface treatment.  Panels in 4 by 8
  19.         sizes are fire rated Class B and are available
  20.         Class A.  Cut to size panels are Class B fire
  21.         rated.

  81. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

  83.     A.  Manufacturer's Qualifications:
  84.         1.  Minimum 10 years experience in producing acoustical
  85.             panels of the type specified herein.

  87. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
  88.  
  89.     A.  Deliver materials in manufacturer's original packages.

  91.     B.  Inspect the materials upon delivery to assure that
  92.         specified products have been received.

  94.     C.  Report damaged material immediately to the delivering
  95.         carrier and note such damage on the carrier's freight

  101. 1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS

  103.     A.  Environmental Requirements:  For 24 hours before, during,

  105.         and humidity conditions that will approximate interior
  106.         conditions following building occupancy.

  130. NOTE ** Nominal size of panels is 4 by 8 feet (1.219 by
  131.         2.438 m).  Actual size is 47-3/16 by 95-7/8 inches
  132.         (1.198 by 2.435 m).

  134.     A.  Class A Cork Panels:  Homasote Nova Cork Panels.
  135.         1.  Substrate:  NCFR(R) fiberboard manufactured from 100
  136.             percent recycled wood fiber material; physical
  137.             properties as follows:
  138.             a.  Thickness:  1/2 inch (13 mm).
  139.             b.  Density:  34-40 pcf (545-640 kg/cubic m).
  140.             c.  Water Absorption by volume (2 hour immersion):  5
  141.                 percent maximum.
  142.             d.  Expansion, 50 to 90 percent relative humidity:
  143.                 0.30 percent.
  144.             e.  R-value:  0.85 (0.015).
  145.             f.  NRC:  0.20.
  146.             g.  Flame Spread (cork on one face):  25, per ASTM E

  188.         subparagraphs below.

  190.         2.  Edge Detail:  Long edges  beveled, one face only.

  192. 2.3 ACCESSORIES
  193. NOTE ** Installation accessories are dependent on
  194.         substrates and installation methods as recommended
  195.         by the manufacturer; select from the following
  196.         paragraphs accordingly.

  198.     A.  Metal Frame Clips:  Manufacturer's standard clip for
  199.         securing panels to framing.
  200.  
  201.     B.  Adhesive:  APA approved panel adhesive.
  202.  
  203.     C.  Adhesive:  APA AFG-01 subfloor adhesive.

  205.     D.  Nails:  Color coordinated paneling nails, length as
  206.         required to penetrate wood framing 3/4 inch (19 mm)
  207.         minimum.

  209.     E.  Nails:  Finishing nails, length as required to penetrate
  210.         wood framing 3/4 inch (19 mm) minimum.

  212.     F.  Screws:
  213.         1.  Wood Framing:  Coarse thread drywall type wood screw,

  217.         3.  Metal Framing:  20 gage or heavier, self-tapping

  221. PART 3  EXECUTION
  222.  
  223. 3.1 EXAMINATION
  224.  
  225.     A.  Examine substrates upon which work will be installed.
  226.  
  227.     B.  Verify framing member spacing complies with
  228.         manufacturer's requirements depending on substrates and
  229.         installation methods.
  230.  
  231.     C.  Verify environmental conditions are, and will continue to
  232.         be, maintained in accordance with manufacturer's
  233.         recommendations.
  234.  
  235.     D.  Coordinate with responsible entity to perform corrective
  236.         work on unsatisfactory substrates or conditions.
  237.  
  238.     E.  Starting work by installer is acceptance of substrate and
  239.         environmental conditions.
  240.  
  241. 3.2 PREPARATION
  242.  
  243.     A.  Follow manufacturer's instructions for allowing panels to
  244.         be exposed to environmental temperature and humidity
  245.         conditions for not less than 24 hours before start of
  246.         installation.
  247.  
  248. 3.3 INSTALLATION
  249. NOTE ** Homasote specifies framing at 16 inches (400 mm)
  250.         o.c. for all installation methods except over
  251.         finished walls; panel edges and ends are required
  252.         to align with framing members or be blocked for all
  253.         methods.  Verify that appropriate framing section
  254.         or drawing notes comply.  Special framing may be
  255.         required if panel joint layout is defined.
  256. NOTE **
  257. NOTE ** Furring for masonry or concrete walls can be one-
  258.         by's (19 mm) wood or standard hat-shaped metal
  259.         furring channels.  Specify furring in the
  260.         appropriate wood or metal framing section.
  261.  
  262.     A.  Follow manufacturer's instructions for cutting and
  263.         installation of panels:
  264. NOTE ** Installation is dependent on substrates; select
  265.         from the following subparagraphs accordingly,
  266.         deleting those not required for the project.
  267.         1.  Wood Framed Walls, Method No. 1, (using framing
  268.             clips).
  269.         2.  Wood Framed Walls, Method No. 2, (using adhesive).
  270.         3.  Metal Framed Walls.
  271.         4.  Wood or Metal Furring over masonry or concrete walls.
  272.         5.  Finished Walls (walls with continuous substrate in
  273.             place).

  275. 3.4 CLEANING
  276.  
  277.     A.  Follow manufacturer's instructions for cleaning panels
  278.         soiled during installation.
  279.  
  280.     B.  Replace panels that cannot be cleaned to "as new"
  281.         condition.
